Happiness 33

What is happiness? Happiness is to us both the greatest cause of pleasure and the greatest cause of pain. When you are happy, you see things in their right proportions: you are not troubled by anything; your heart is full of joy, and it is impossible to trouble it. When you are unhappy, you go about your business as if nothing were the matter. It is the same with other men, if they are unhappy; the soul moves in the same way, but the soul of other men carries along with it a feeling of regret, a sense of shame, and a determination to change its way of talking so that you make more agreeable your conversation with them. Happiness is the greatest cause in every way, and in some men it is the highest happiness: so that those who desire to be happy are happy in the fullest sense of the word, in which they enjoy the most complete and complete freedom
